Advanced separation in one or several stages in series, can be applied to mixtures of crushed materials obtained in the treatment and recycling processes of various post-consumption waste streams: such as packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, end-of-life vehicles, etc. A typical application is plastic mixtures, which require separation between polymers prior to recycling and/or the removal of traces of unwanted materials. Wet densimetric separation by float-sink techniques is used in the recycling industry to segregate mixtures of materials on the basis of their density difference. An input stream can be divided into two output fractions, one with a lower density than the liquid medium or “floated”, and the other with a higher density or “sunk”. The density of the liquid medium is adjusted according to the separation requirements.
