SEM characterisation of composite materials

The presence of pores, poor fibre-matrix interface or chemical attack may compromise the mechanical performance of a composite material leading to the appearance of internal defects that ultimately compromise its structural integrity. It is therefore important to have mechanisms that can determine such defects in composite materials and that enable the breakage mechanism of the materials during their useful life to be determined in order for it to be taken into account during the design phase of the parts.

At GAIKER, we evaluate the internal structure of composite materials to identify the presence of pores, poor matrix-fibre/load interface, poor reinforcement orientation, fibre/load agglomerations, chemical attacks, etc. that may lead to mechanical failure of the material. We evaluate the way the fibres break in order to determine the breakage mechanism.
