Environment

The environmental sector requires supporting technologies and solutions from the early stages of diagnosing the state of a process or site to the treatment and remediation of the problems detected. At GAIKER, we support the environmental sector by developing technologies to assess the health of soils, surface and groundwater, processes and materials, as well as the treatments associated with their purification and remediation.

Solutions

We carry out studies into the treatability and reuse of wastewater and its supply, seeking optimal purification processes to ensure the appropriate quality for its intended use or to meet the requirements laid out in legislation. We develop advanced biological and physical-chemical treatment systems for water reuse and in the assessment of natural attenuation in contaminated groundwater.

We also devise strategies for the remediation and recovery of contaminated soils and sediments by carrying out an exhaustive physical-chemical characterisation, treatability study and the subsequent implementation of treatment by means of biological (bioremediation) and physical-chemical systems.

We develop sustainable and efficient alternatives for the use of pre-consumer and post-consumer waste, including circularity criteria based on the mechanical and chemical recycling of plastics that enable compounds of industrial interest to be recovered and obtained and thus provide our customers’ processes with added value and competitiveness.

GAIKER is a benchmark in life cycle assessment (LCA), covering environmental, social (SLCA) and economic (LCCA) perspectives. Assessment studies are used to supervise impacts and support product re-design (eco-design), provide indicators (e.g. carbon footprint, environmental footprint, circularity index) or develop customised assessment tools.

Major Projects

symbiorem

Development of twelve new bio-based technologies to address the four most common soil and groundwater contaminants in Europe: heavy metals, mineral oil, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and volatile aromatic hydrocarbons.

The SYMBIOREM project received funding from the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101060361. https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101060361.
Proyecto Planta piloto de Etxebarria

Determining the performance level of different configurations of a supply water treatment process (Venta Alta Phase II DWTP), to produce quality water, as per RD 140/2003, by drawing water from the Etxebarri stretch of the River Nervión. Monitoring the by-products of degradation and the impact of certain treatment processes and the way they operation on how these by-products are formed.

  • Tender of the Consorcio de Aguas de Bilbao Bizkaia
ProyectoDestacadoBio-x

Development of a new, more environmentally friendly swimming pool disinfection process that minimises the use of reagents and energy, incorporates biofilters for purification by phytoremediation (use of plants) and alternative disinfection systems to chlorine such as ozonisation, membrane filtration and UV light. Development of capacity control/monitoring software.
