GAIKER’s extensive experience in molecular biology enables us to develop rapid, sensitive and cost-effective detection technologies using molecular recognition markers for the creation of biosensors integrated into Point of Test (PoT) or Point of Care (PoC) devices.
The objective of this research line is to provide practical solutions for industry and the service sector, enabling the identification of microorganisms, biomarkers and clinical parameters, as well as the detection of allergens and environmental pollutants. Our comprehensive experience spans the fields of human, animal and plant health, environmental monitoring and food safety and process within the framework of Industry 4.0.
Our main investigation lines include the development of portable tests based on lateral flow technology (rapid antigen test), which enable on-site analyte detection by non-specialized personnel without the need for additional equipment. Additionally, we focus on the development of point-of-test sensors and devices thant utilize ultra-rapid isothermal amplification techniques for the amplification of specific genetic markers as an alternative to PCR. Laboratory-scale bio-detection devices are adapted for field verification and application.

The SMARTFARM project analyses the critical points of and how to strengthen the integrated quality management systems of food companies in the meat and poultry sector.
The main aim of the project is to develop a new loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) technique for the direct detection of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva samples as a less invasive alternative to the nasopharyngeal detection process.
Development of biosensors of interest to the food industry: Development of electrochemical sensors on microfluidic platforms for the advanced genetic detection of Listeria monocytogenes. Selection and characterisation of biosensing molecules (aptamers), and development of strategies for the functionalisation of magnetoelastic sensors.

As part of the project's overall goal to develop diagnostic tools, GAIKER is involved in developing a portable system based on lateral flow technology to detect biomarkers of relevance in urine samples in the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

The project consists of developing a portable, easy-to-handle detector of indicators of environmental biological contamination, capable of giving a result in less than an hour, based on a novel genetic diagnostic technique. Once developed, the prototype will significantly improve, in a preventive way, the biological safety of indoor air in office buildings, geriatric centres, kindergartens and in general indoor buildings at risk of suffering from so-called sick building syndrome.

Development of a point-of-care device (LegioPoC) based on molecular biology technology for the on-site preventive detection of Legionella spp. The LegioPoC device is an innovative alternative molecular system based on isothermal amplification. The main technological challenge will be how to adapt this technology to the lab-on-a-chip format.
